Hull KR star Joe Burgess addresses controversial try with Pinocchio reference

Hull KR made it to the Super League Grand Final with a 10-8 win over Warrington Wolves and Joe Burgess has spoken on his controversial try.

It was a historic night at Craven Park as Hull KR made it to the Grand Final for the first time in their history, aided by Joe Burgess’ controversial try late in the first half.

The winger shot over the line from dummy-half and whilst he certainly got over the line, it was unclear whether the ball had done so or not.

One man who thought that it had got over the line and been grounded was referee Liam Moore who awarded the try on-field whilst sending it to the video referee.

As such, video referee Jack Smith needed solid evidence to overturn the decision and after several camera angles and a lengthy review, no such evidence could be found.

That was a very controversial call with commentator Barrie McDermott one of many to call it out as he stated: “For me, Hull KR have got one there that they shouldn’t. He was short, he was held up but it’s been given.

“I think they’ve rode their luck on that one. Warrington looked like they had done enough.”

Now, the man at the middle of the controversy, Joe Burgess, has had his say.

Warrington dominated the second half but both of Matty Ashton’s tries were unconverted meaning that Hull KR edged the game 10-8 with Burgess’ try proving vital.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-game, the former Salford man was asked if he had grounded the ball or not.

“Yes, next question,” Burgess swiftly responded before mimicking his nose growing, akin to Pinocchio.

It was a gesture that is sure to rile up Warrington Wolves fans and will be deemed to make a mockery of the sport and particularly the video referee process in the eyes of some fans.

When pushed further on the matter, Burgess answered: “Who knows?

“I definitely brushed the floor, whether it was on the line or not, I don’t know.”

Regardless of whether he did or did not ground the ball, it is Hull KR who will be playing in the Grand Final next Saturday and not Warrington Wolves.
