Hull KR are one of the Super League sides firmly on the rise and they’ve shown plenty of ambition, but there could be more to come in particular a new signing to round off their talented squad.
Rovers’ squad is already very impressive with a strong recruitment window that has seen the likes of ex-Wire man Peta Hiku, Catalans playmaker Tyrone May and exiled Salford winger Joe Burgess all arrive at the club.
That’s built on what was already a squad that made it to the Challenge Cup Final and the play-off semi-finals in Willie Peters’ first season as head coach.
Local talent like Mikey Lewis, who starred for England in the Tonga test series, and hooker Jez Litten has given them a core to build around and as such it’s no wonder that fans are excited.
Another reason for Robins’ fans to get excited would be that the club could be set to make another signing before the season starts, KR purposely leaving the number 18 shirt vacant when confirming their squad numbers for 2024.
The shirt was formerly worn by Jimmy Keinhorst who has made the move to York Knights in the Championship, the German international proving to be an incredibly versatile and reliable utility player for the club.
Who could the new signing for Hull KR be?
All this begs the question of who the Robins will make a move for with the team having reportedly struggled with cap space at one point this off-season.
However since then the loan deal to shift Jordan Abdull’s wages off their cap, facilitating the arrival of Joe Burgess as well, has likely left the Robins with some money in the coffers.
Some reports had suggested that the club had been interested in a rugby union convert, set to take advantage of the reduced cap hit for players crossing codes.
As such Regan Grace was mentioned however Serious About Rugby League confirmed that link to be false, besides the fact that Grace was rugby league trained and therefore wouldn’t qualify for cap considerations anyway.
Squad Needs for Hull KR to contend in Super League
Rovers are in a fortunate position in that they’ve managed to build an incredibly strong squad and have far fewer needs than most clubs.
They had potentially been short at winger but adding in Joe Burgess is a huge boost for them, the ex-Wigan man joining a wingers room including Ryan Hall, Louis Senior and new signing Niall Evalds as well as some promising young players.
Perhaps with the loss of Abdull the club could move for a half-back as cover for the dynamic pair of Lewis and May, Luke Gale having been a named banded about as a murmur.
One thing that we know for certain is that whoever KR sign will be taken the number 18 shirt for the 2024 campaign.
