Hull KR secure their first win at St Helens for 11 years

Hull KR maintained their role as favourites for the League Leaders’ Shield today as they soundly defeated St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Hull KR came into the game having won their previous six games and sat top of the Super League table.

Conversely, St Helens were defeated last week 20-0 by rivals Wigan Warriors, and are facing the possibility of missing out on the Super League playoffs for the very first time.

Joe Burgess scored an incredible four tries in a game where the Robins never looked like dropping off, even when Whitby pulled one back for Saints.

Burgess had his first of the afternoon after just three minutes, touching down with an acrobatic effort on the right-hand side.

Waqa Blake’s sin-binning early on – after just eight minutes – didn’t help proceedings, but Tommy Makinson’s red card just five minutes from time just made the defeat a little more tough to take for Paul Wellens, who has recently been given a contract for next season.

Makinson’s red card was for a high shot on Tyrone May, who went off for a HIA – and may worry about the Match Review Panel’s decision on Monday, despite many people suggesting it was on the harsher side.

Mikey Lewis was yet again at the centre of things, scoring a try and adding five conversions – although he did miss three as the Robins managed eight tries against the home side.

Lewis’ chip over the top right near the end allowed Jai Whitbread to score the final try of the afternoon and to make the scoreline a little bit sweeter for Willie Peters.

Leigh Leopards, with a victory over London Broncos tomorrow, would move within just one point of the Saints – and could pull of the unlikely feat of clinching their own post-season berth.
