Hull KR man missing from Challenge Cup captain’s run as Willie Peters gives injury update

Willie Peters admits a call still hasn’t been made on whether Micky McIlorum will be involved for Hull KR in the Challenge Cup final after the hooker sat out of Friday’s captain’s run.

The hooker was originally expected to miss the final against Warrington Wolves at Wembley after undergoing bicep surgery just seven weeks ago. However, Peters dropped the bombshell during Monday’s press conference that he would travel this weekend and could be involved, four weeks before he was due to return.

McIlorum was named in the 21-man squad on Thursday and Peters has confirmed he is in London with the team. However, he was conspicuous by his absence at Rovers captain’s run on the Wembley turf, with the veteran noticeably not training with his teammates.

In his final interview before cup final day, Peters moved to explain his absence and speak about his chances of being involved against Warrington Wolves.

Hull KR boss gives Micky McIlorum update

“He’s with the squad but hasn’t trained,” Peters said. “We’ll make a decision over whether he plays tomorrow. He’s done some work this week but needs to jump another hurdle before we say yes or no.

“He’s done what he’s had to do in terms of getting to this stage and will have to pass something on game day.

“With his injury, there’s a lot of risk involved. If he did play, there’s a high chance he could get injured.

“It’s a decision he will make. We’ll know more tomorrow after we do what we need to do.”

Asked whether the likelihood of him only playing a short spell made a difference, Peters added: “Yes and no. It’s an injury where if he gets put in a vulnerable position, it could happen any time. Whether it’s one minute or 79 minutes, there’s risk involved.

“We all value him. Mick has come here to help us win one of these. We’re in a position to be able to do that.

“We’ve just got to make sure he’s in the right frame of mind. The only person that can decide that is him.”
