Mikey Lewis has gone under the knife as he prepares himself for the start of the new Super League season. The Hull KR man enjoyed a stellar 2024 campaign in Super League, with his consistently devastating performances helping the Robins to their first ever Grand Final.
Rovers fell short in that game at Old Trafford but Lewis’ form was still enough to see him pick up the Man of Steel award, pipping Marc Sneyd and Matt Dufty over the course of the campaign. Of course, Lewis would rather have lifted the Super League trophy last month rather than the individual honour, but the award shows just how pivotal he was to Willie Peters’ side as the 23-year-old matures into one of Super League’s finest.
Lewis posted on Instagram on Wednesday to reveal he had undergone surgery, with the half-back posting a picture of himself wearing a hospital gown alongside the words, ‘op done’.
As first reported by Hull Live, the 23-year-old’s surgery was to deal with a minor groin issue that he picked up towards the end of last season. Due to his international commitments, Lewis won’t be in pre-season training until close to Christmas and the recovery period isn’t expected to be too long.
Most of the Rovers first-team began returning to Craven Park this week for testing and to be put through their paces after a six-week lay-off. Lewis is one of those who will be given more time, though, while Peta Hiku is expected to return at a later date, too, after featuring for New Zealand in the Pacific Championships.
Hull KR will have just one pre-season friendly to get ready for the 2025 season ahead, with the club travelling to Amsterdam to take on Championship side York Knights ahead of their season opener against Castleford Tigers on home soil.
