Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has spoken on the major developments at the club with the Robins earning a comparison to an NRL giant.
It has recently been confirmed that there will be a huge development at Craven Park with the regeneration project aimed to improve both the team’s facilities but also enhance those of the local community.
That’s seen Peters draw a comparison to former club South Sydney Rabbitohs with the Australian likening the “strengthening relationship” with what he saw Down Under, whereby a club fully embraces its community.
The community of East Hull have certainly embraced Peters during his first two and a bit seasons in charge of KR and why wouldn’t they? Whilst silverware still eludes the Robins, they’ve made it to Wembley, Old Trafford and recorded their highest-ever Super League finish and highest average attendance.

Hull KR are a club on the up and this latest development shows that, but for Peters the significance isn’t just on how that development enhances the club.
“Yeah, it’s huge,” he confirmed when asked about the plans.
“It’s massive for KR, but also for the community. The opportunities it’s going to give to many people with jobs and living a healthy lifestyle.
“I’m a massive believer that people make a club and an environment and it’s certainly nice to be able to be in a position now that we have one of the best set-ups in the Super League but it’s more than that.”
That mantra has been evident at Wigan Warriors as well with Matt Peet often speaking about how the club can enhance the community as opposed to simply what they can take from their fans.
Peters had a similar line of thought, explaining: “It’s about what we can give to our community and how we can engage with our community. It’s not just about us, so it’s an exciting project, there’s no doubt about that, and we’re looking forward to it.
“It’ll be a couple of years’ time, I think, to when it’s developed, but it’s certainly an exciting opportunity for everyone involved, especially for the community.”

Having spent just over two seasons in East Hull, Peters has come to appreciate the club’s ethics and fan base with Craven Park widely regarded as the most atmospheric stadium in Super League with a major part of that down to the passionate fans.
On those fans, and how this development affects them, he said: “To some people, they’ve got family and unfortunately some people don’t but it’s KR and it’s what they love. It’s their major interest and hobby and it means so much to so many people around this area.”
That saw him make his NRL comparison, adding:”To be able to share something where we can strengthen that relationship and I’ve seen it done before with the Rabbitohs, it’s very similar. When you’ve got the community involved and engaged, there’s no doubt it helps on field performance but it’s bigger than that.
“It’s more than that, we’re a community club and our whole mantra is about making our community proud so to be able to to engage with them you know in more depth through a project like this is exciting.”
Hull KR fans might not see the developed Craven Park for a couple of years but they’ll continue to pack the stadium out, as they did on Sunday when they beat Leigh Leopards 30-0 in front of over 11,000 in a top-of-the-table clash.

More of this! Every club in Super League, this is what we should aspire to be like! The antithesis of the origins of the elitist Rugby Football Union and it’s continued elitist stance! Embrace fully the community where the game was born, nurtured, where the fans maintain a far stronger link to their clubs! This is a brilliant development by Rovers!
