Hull KR launch brilliant new Super League shirt

Hull KR have launched their alternative shirt for 2022.

The anniversary shirt, which is launching on this special 140th year, will pay tribute to the spirit of the boilermakers who were instrumental in forming the club in 1882.

The origins of Hull KR can be traced back to its formation as the Kingston Amateurs in the winter of 1882.

A group of young apprentice boilermakers employed by local firms C.D. Holmes and Amos & Smith, met in a small, terraced house in Vauxhall Grove, Hessle Road to form Rovers.

Despite funds being tight, in 1886 the club donated the proceeds of a tie against Beverley to the relief fund for the families of eight men killed in Albert Dock, when a boiler on the steamer Cartago Nova blew up.

Equally, the prize money of the club’s first-ever trophy win, a Times Cup triumph over Selby, was donated to local medical charities, further cementing the club’s bond with the local community.

In 1897 the club broke away from the Yorkshire Rugby Union to play in the Northern Union (Rugby League), believing it is only right that players should be compensated for loss of earnings while playing and training for the club.

Hull KR Chief Executive Paul Lakin paid tribute to the original Boilermakers and said: “We are so pleased to bring to life what is in many ways an untold story.

“It’s been so fascinating to learn about how the community spirit and strong moral compass was embedded in the club culture from day one. Something we do our best each day to uphold.

“We have done so much this year that is focused on the future, from running a record number of teams, purchasing the stadium, to evolving our badge. So it’s nice to take a moment to reflect on those who came before us and pay tribute to them.”
