Hull KR ran riot at The Totally Wicked Stadium as they beat St Helens on the road for the first time in 11 years but there was cause for concern late on after Tyrone May copped a shot from Tommy Makinson.
The Robins ran out 42-6 winners but with the game sealed at 36-6 and less than ten minutes to go, St Helens winger Tommy Makinson flew out of the line and made shoulder-on-head contact with KR playmaker Tyrone May.
Referee Chris Kendall had no option as he explained to Makinson, “You’re bolt upright, it’s shoulder direct to head and there is no mitigation”, possibly leaving the Red Vee without their winger for one or more games if the disciplinary panel take the same view tomorrow.
As for Tyrone May, he left the field following the high shot and Hull KR boss Willie Peters has now revealed how his star playmaker is doing.
“Yeah, he’s happy. He’s got his medal around his neck, so he’s all right,” Peters responded to BBC Humberside post-match, when asked about May.
“He’s okay, he came off precautionary, but he’s fine. ”
Hull KR injury-free after stuffing Saints
From those comments, it seems that May either passed or did not require a HIA but his healthy status is huge for the Robins as they head into the final four games of the season.
Hull KR have been fortunate with injuries of late and Peters confirmed that he believed his side had come through injury-free once again as they head towards Round 24 and a home tie against Salford.
“I’ll get an injury report, but no, I took Mini (Elliot Minchella) off, because he plays big minutes, James Batchelor was the same, so I’m hoping everyone got through okay, but I need to get a final injury report,” Peters explained.
He gave particular praise to both May and centre Jack Broadbent who had been the one enforced change after Oliver Gildart failed a HIA at Magic Weekend.
“I thought Tyrone was outstanding today and he was the orchestrator of it all,” Peters noted.
“I thought he (Jack Broadbent) did well, he’s been training exceptionally well against the first team and everything he does is wholehearted, he puts 100% effort in and that’s all we ask from our players. I knew that he’d grab the opportunity and he did today.”
On the overall performance, Peters was understandably happy but paid credit to St Helens who were without several first-team starters due to injuries, with debutant George Whitby earning praise from the Hull KR boss.
“I was really happy with it. We know that Saints are going through a lot at the moment in terms of injuries, so they’ve played a lot of young players. Credit to them, they didn’t stop trying and George Whitby got a try for them. For us, it shows a sign of maturity and growth as a team that we can play like that.”

At least there will be no comments about players feigning injury from this match.

“Star cops blow”.
If you were more interested in reporting the match and less interested in a headline, you would know May was taken off as a precaution AND passed an HIA even before the Sky coverage had finished because even their feeble reporting managed to pick that up!
