Hull KR hooker makes loan move for start of season

A Hull KR hooker who can also play in the halves has left the club on loan ahead of the start of the 2025 Super League season.

At the end of 2024, the Robins lost star hooker Matt Parcell to retirement whilst Reiss Butterworth joined Sheffield Eagles after his one-year deal expired, however, they signed London’s Bill Leyland and Super League great Micky McIlorum to fill the void.

As such, it has meant that young star Lennie Ellis is buried in the depth chart so Hull KR have opted to loan him out for the start of the 2025 season.

Ellis, who debuted for the Robins in Super League in 2023, will join League One club Goole Vikings on a six-week loan deal with immediate effect.

That means he will be available this weekend to play for Goole in their Round Three Challenge Cup tie against Wakefield Trinity – something that would also prevent him from playing for KR at a later stage in the competition.

Both Hull KR and Goole confirmed the loan deal with the Robins wishing the youngster all the best in his bid to ‘gain experience and get more games under his belt’, whilst Goole spoke very highly of their new signing.

The League One side, who shocked London Broncos in Round Two of the Challenge Cup, shared the news of Ellis’ signing via a club statement.

It read: “The Vikings have moved to further strengthen their spine options with the loan signing of dynamic hooker Lennie Ellis from Super League side Hull Kingston Rovers.

“Originally a Beverley Braves ARLFC junior, the 19-year-old has come through the Robins scholarship and academy teams, becoming a regular fixture in their reserve team squad.

“He has also been selected for Yorkshire Origin, as well as making his first-team debut against Wigan Warriors in 2023.

“Ellis, who can play as a hooker or half back, spent time on loan in the Championship with Whitehaven RLFC last season.”

Vikings head coach Scott Taylor said: “We are pleased to bring Lennie into camp this week and give him an opportunity to get some much needed first-team football.

“He is a player we know a fair bit about and he knows a lot of our boys already, so to have that connection already is valuable and he will fit straight in

“We needed some cover at hooker, which we have addressed with the arrival of Lennie and Ryan Wright, which gives us some real strength in depth.

“Ellis can play at 9 or 7, which gives us some options, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how he goes for us – he has a bright future and it is a move that probably works out well for everyone.”
