Hull KR have been handed a huge boost when it comes to the injury fate of their star halfback Mikey Lewis.
It was expected that the Rovers star could miss a large chunk of the season after hobbling off during their win over Wakefield Trinity. He damaged his ankle in the act of scoring the match-winning try as it got stuck underneath a Wakefield defender.
After the medical team strapped it up, he remained on the pitch but was substituted only 12 minutes later. Lewis was later seen with a protective boot on sitting on the bench and on crutches after the final whistle.
Lewis was a dejected figure at full-time understandably, with fans fearing he could be out for a number of weeks if not months. However, it seems his return will be much quicker than expected.
Mikey Lewis Hull KR injury news
The reigning Man of Steel has been told that there is ‘no significant damage to his ankle’ from the additional scans taken on Monday, per Hull Live.
Hull KR will let him rest up for this weekend’s home game against Salford Red Devils. However, he could be in contention to return the week after when the Robins face a trip to St Helens.
The club will assess his fitness on a weekly basis to determine if he’s ready to return in two weeks’ time. Lewis has had trouble with that ankle previously, having had an operation on it in the past.
Meanwhile, Hull KR head coach Willie Peters still faces a headache in the halfback department for the Salford match. Fellow halfback Tyrone May missed the Wakefield match due to a hamstring strain.
He was expected to be out for a couple of weeks but has recovered quicker than expected. May will undergo a rigorous fitness test on Wednesday and could be back in the starting line-up on Thursday. Peters admitted that they do have a plan B should May not pass his fitness test.
Hull KR’s injury boost will please fans but they do have options with Peta Hiku and Danny Richardson both available.
