Hull KR forward signs with new club for 2025

Matty Storton

Hull KR forward Matty Storton has signed with Wakefield Trinity on a three-year deal from 2025 onwards.

Storton was among nine players set to leave Hull KR at the end of the current campaign with the 25-year-old off contract and his destination next season has now been confirmed.

Championship high-flyers Wakefield Trinity have made Storton their sixth signing for 2025 after Tom Johnstone, Mike McMeeken, Cam Scott, Olly Russell and fellow Hull KR man Corey Hall.

Both Wakefield Trinity and Hull KR have confirmed the news with the Robins revealing that the former Bradford Bills man is aiming to help the Robins into the playoffs before he departs.

A statement on the Hull KR website said: “Hull KR can confirm Matty Storton will depart the club at the end of the 2024 Betfred Super League season.”

The forward commented: ” I’d firstly like to thank the club, and the fans for the past five seasons. It’s been a great journey, and to see where the club is today from where it was when I signed, I’m proud to have been a part of that.

“There’s still a massive job ahead though and I’m fully committed to keep pushing towards the end of the season, and a chance to achieve something special with this great club.”

Whilst it is a blow for Hull KR, it’s a significant move for Wakefield Trinity as they get a Super League-level prop with bags of experience. Storton has played 97 times for the Robins so far and will likely make it a century before he departs.

He’ll form a fearsome forward pack at Wakefield next season with Trin expecting to be back in Super League. They too confirmed the news with a statement on their club website.

It read: “Wakefield Trinity can confirm the signing of Matty Storton from the start of the 2025 season!

“The forward has joined on a three-year deal that will see him remain at the DIY Kitchens Stadium until the end of the 2027 season.

“Despite just being 25-years old, Storton has made over 100 appearances across his time at Bradford Bulls and Hull KR.”

On signing for Wakefield, Storton said: “I’m buzzing to sign at Wakefield for the next three years, the club is doing really good things on and off the field, can’t wait to get started.”

Trinity Head Coach, Daryl Powell said: “We are delighted to add Matty to our squad for next season and beyond. As a coach I have tried to sign him before as I love what he brings to a team. His energy is infectious and his ability to play in the middle unit and the back row adds great flexibility to our squad. I’m looking forward to seeing how good he can become in our environment.”

Recruitment Manager, Ste Mills said: “Matty will be a great addition to Wakefield Trinity, knowing Matty for a number of years now, I know his personality will be infectious within our environment. On the field, he will be a great asset to our middle unit with the flexibility to play in the back row, he’s an aggressive ball carrier and defender who values all the little details and effort areas within his game. So I know he will be a huge success and a favourite within the squad and the fans. Looking forward to welcoming Matty in for 2025 and beyond.”
