Hull KR enlist help of ex-professional boxer as Super League preparations step up

Hull KR have once against enlisted the help of former professional boxer Tommy Coyle to help them prepare for the new season. The Robins are in Tenerife as they prepare for the start of the 2025 Super League campaign, with the squad being put through their paces in a sunnier climate.

It comes as a welcome change to the cold East Yorkshire weather and the change of scenery will allow Rovers to bond as a group and get through some fitness work after a small break over the festive period. And, after welcoming Coyle into camp last year, the Robins have done so again this time around, with the boxer, pictured on the club’s channels leading a session.

Coyle, a former Commonwealth lightweight champion, hails from east Hull and has met up with the group in a gym in Tenerife for day one of their camp, with Mikey Lewis and Rhyse Martin among those pictured training.

The ‘ambush’, as the club’s media team have described on Twitter, will have made for a tough start to their time in the Canary Islands and it isn’t likely to get any easier. The squad have today been pictured on the turf going through running drills and exercises, with a video of a game with a football also being posted.

The Robins will be pushed to their limits in the Spanish sunshine as they attempt to end their 40-year wait for a trophy after being beaten by Wigan in the Grand Final in October and given they lost the 2023 Challenge Cup final to Leigh Leopards, the bit will be firmly between their teeth.

Hull KR aren’t the only club who will be warm weather training this month, with Huddersfield Giants getting away from the snow today, while Leigh Leopards will be Lanzarote bound next week.
