According to former St Helens man Jon Wilkin, wheelchair rugby league is ready to “explode” after England won the World Cup Final last week.

Many Super League clubs like Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors already have a wheelchair side as do Hull FC.

However, Hull KR don’t but according to the head of their foundation Craig Shepherd they are keen to.

He also dispelled a rumour that the RFL won’t allow two wheelchair teams in Hull.

“I don’t think that’s true,” he said of the rumour, “I think they just want to grow the game.

“The cost of setting up a wheelchair team isn’t cheap, but we would have to work really hard as a charity to develop and setup a wheelchair rugby league team.

“There are a number of hubs across the UK that take part in Rugby League, and I would love the opportunity to bring Wheelchair Rugby League to Hull KR.

“We have to be mindful of the challenges, such as facility requirements, but ultimately we would like to make Hull KR as inclusive as possible, so it’s certainly on our radar.”

He also revealed how fans can get behind the foundation and help things like a wheelchair team get off the ground:

“It is all findable on the website. hullkr.co.uk even if you can’t donate, there are many ways you can support us by getting involved in our activities or even by volunteering, so I urge anyone to please get in touch with us. You can email us at community@hullkr.co.uk.”
