Hull KR confirm Mikey Lewis injury news ahead of Wigan Warriors clash

Hull KR

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has given an injury update on star man Mikey Lewis after the Man of Steel limped off against Hull FC in Saturday’s Challenge Cup victory.

With the scores level, Lewis pulled up whilst running and then limped off with what appeared to be and was later confirmed as a groin injury.

The Man of Steel had limped off earlier in the season in the Round Two win over Wakefield but fortunately, only missed one Super League game and that could be the case again this time.

Asked about the fitness of his star player in his mid-week presser, Peters confirmed: “He’s had scans and there’s a minor issue there so he won’t play this week, but we’ll just see how it settles for the next week.

“It’s more of a muscle. He’s done a better part of the groin, where it’s not as bad as if you strained or tore another part of it, so we’ve got some good news there.”

Peters would elaborate explaining that there’s no clear return date for the 23-year-old, only that he would definitely miss out on Friday night when Hull KR host Wigan and that the situation would be monitored.

“It’ll be one of those where it is week to week,” he explained.

“We’ll just need to see how he is. He’ll be out this week, so we won’t be playing this week. We’ll just have to monitor him and see how he goes.”

The confirmed absence of Lewis opens up a spot in the halves and there are plenty of options on how to best fill it, including the club’s Challenge Cup hero Jez Litten who scored 16 points off the bench when deputising on Saturday.

Other options include recognised half-back Danny Richardson, with Peters explaining: “We need to finalise the team, but Richo will certainly be in the mix. We’ve got some options there and we’ll just wait and see later on in the week.”

Whilst Lewis is a key loss, there could be a major boost if James Batchelor passes fit after picking up a hamstring injury in the win against Huddersfield Giants.

On the second-rower, Peters added: “Batchelor is going to do his best to play this week in terms of fitness testing and we’ll be able to make a call on him later on in the week, so we’ll just need to see where he’s at.”
