Hull KR coach sheds light on Tyrone May and Mikey Lewis injuries with replacement outlined

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters spoke after his side’s win over Wakefield Trinity to provide an injury update on stars Mikey Lewis and Tyrone May.

The Australian also gave insight into how the club will replace the duo if their injuries mean they miss more game time, something that looks likely given the early diagnosis for each man.

Peters was speaking post game after the 14-12 win over Wakefield Trinity, a game that Tyrone May missed through injury and which saw Mikey Lewis sustain an injury, meaning the Robins could be without their starting halves for next week’s game against Salford.

The game itself was another incredibly tough battle and Peters gave huge credit to Super League as a competition for the rising standards.

Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside, he said: “We knew last week was going to be tough but we knew this week was going to be tough as well and I think that’s the beauty of the competition.

“It’s a very competitive competition and if you’re not on then you’re going to get beaten but I was really proud with the effort and intent from our players tonight.”

For the second consecutive week Hull KR opened the scoring but they couldn’t build on it with the score just 6-2 at half-time. Mikey Lewis’ barge-over try gave the Robins a 14-8 lead but crucially saw the star man sustain his ankle injury.

That margin of lead remained for most of the game until Oliver Pratt danced over late on presenting Max Jowitt a chance to tie the scores, something he failed to do leaving Peters both delighted but more than aware that his side were at risk of going to golden point for a second straight week.

He admitted: “It could have easily gone to golden point but fortunately enough he missed that kick but they asked more questions at the back end as well.

“I thought we had a really good start that set the platform but momentum swung a lot. We were in control for most of the second half but not the back end, it was pretty scary at the back end.”

Perhaps one of the reasons why Hull KR couldn’t truly stamp their authority on the game was the absence of Tyrone May, who missed the game after Peters teased earlier in the week that an unnamed player was a doubt.

On May, the Hull KR boss said: “He had a slight issue that day, it was a minor hamstring strain so we’re hoping it’s just going to be a couple of weeks but you don’t want to rush those sort of things.”

Matters were made worse when Mikey Lewis picked up his injury, initially continuing before being forced off and then seen hobbling around on crutches and in a boot.

On the Man of Steel, Peters said: “It’s one of those where we’ve got to wait for him to go for a scan. Fingers crossed, it’s nothing too serious.

“He’s had an issue there before. I’m no expert but speaking to the physio he might have aggravated that, that’s what we’re hoping because otherwise it could be worse.”

Peters also confirmed that Danny Richardson had been recalled from Huddersfield Giants with the ex-Cas man likely to have to step into the fray, potentially alongside Peta Hiku should both Lewis and May miss game time.

Confirming Richardson’s recall, Peters said: “We play Thursday to Thursday and our main session is on the Monday so it was one of those where we had to wait and see how we went tonight and see where we’re at, that’s why we recalled him.

“I thought Peta did a really good job tonight, we wanted him running the ball. He’s a big body and defensively he made his tackles. I’d have to look back but I thought he did a good job.”
