Hull KR head coach Willie Peters insists he hasn’t agreed to become a member of Kevin Walters’ Australia squad just yet.
That’s despite reports in the Australian media claiming that Peters has been appointed as a Kangaroos assistant coach ahead of this autumn’s Ashes Test series with England.
Speaking during a media call with the British rugby league press pack, Walters spoke about Peters and singled out KR as one of the clubs who have caught his eye in Super League recently.
The Australia boss also said that he would be in touch with Peters, along with Hull FC coach John Cartwright and Leeds Rhinos chief Brad Arthur with the aim of appointing a Super League-based assistant.
Both Cartwright and Arthur subsequently distanced themselves from such a role, with the pair insisting that they will be heading back home to Australia to spend time with their families when the Super League season comes to an end.
Since then Walters has been in touch with Peters and the Rovers boss has made it clear that he would jump at the chance to be involved on the Kangaroos tour.
But, Peters has suggested that the Australian press might have jumped the gun when it comes to reports that the KR head coach has been appointed.
Hull KR boss gives update on Australia assistant job after reports
“Kevvie publicly said he was going to call me, which he did,” Peters told the press about the job in his pre-match Hull KR press conference ahead of the derby clash with Hull FC.
“We chatted around the game over here itself and just general conversation around footy and life, and all that sort of stuff.
“But no, there’s been nothing at this stage. Would I like to? Yes I would, if there was an opportunity. It would be an honour to be involved in the Australian team.
“But it was just general chats and I’m sure Kevin will come back to me at the right time. There’s been nothing official.
“I know it’s been reported in the media but if asked, I would like to be involved and have made that clear.
“There’s nothing finalised and I haven’t heard back as yet.”
