Hull KR boss Willie Peters issues Mikey Lewis injury update after derby concern

Hull KR boss Willie Peters is hopeful that Mikey Lewis might be able to avoid a lengthy lay-off after picking up a groin injury against Hull FC on Saturday.

The Rovers half-back picked up the issue after just 15 minutes of the Challenge Cup quarter-final at the MKM Stadium and was forced to leave the field of play. He could be seen warming up on the touchline later in the first half but the decision was made not to send him back on.

Speaking to the press after the Robins’ 32-16 win, which saw them seal their spot in the final four of the competition, Peters admitted there was a chance Lewis could have stepped back into the contest. But, the KR head coach won’t know the full extent of the injury until the reigning Man of Steel has been fully assessed.

“It’s a groin issue,” Peters said after the game. “I’m not 100 per cent exactly what it is or how serious it is. He’ll need to get scans.

“From what I hear I don’t understand it to be honest because it’s another part of the groin. I won’t go into it because I don’t understand it.

“You can crack on or it might only be minor, a couple of weeks. At this stage I’m hoping it’s not going to be a six to eight week injury, we’ll know more after scans.

“It’s not a straightforward one because he possibly could have gone back on. That’s what I don’t understand, if you’ve strained or torn your groin, you’d find it pretty hard coming back on.

“There is a part of the groin that I’m not 100 per cent sure of. It’s not as serious as if he did another part. This is one where I think he could have come back on but would have needed to be injected.”

The injury occurred with the game scoreless and on a knife edge at the MKM Stadium and Lewis leaving the fray could have derailed Hull KR. Jez Litten’s introduction helped the Robins put their foot on the gas, though, with two quickfire tries helping Rovers take control of the contest and Peters was delighted with the way his side came through that adversity.

“It could have gone either way,” Peters said. “You lose a player of Mikey’s quality and what he does for the team but then you bring on someone who has a real calm head in Jez, I think he got every single conversion as well, he had some big plays today.

“There was some big plays by many people, Micky McIlorum, I thought Jared was strong, I don’t want to single to many out but Peta was good, too.”
