Hull KR boss Willie Peters has addressed the speculation that the Super League side had shown an interest and made an offer for Wakefield Trinity half-back Luke Gale.
The Robins are in the market for a back-up in the halves following the season-long loan deal of Jordan Abdull to Catalans Dragons, and they had an offer rejected for the 35-year-old, as first reported by the Yorkshire Post.
Those claims were rubbished by new Trinity boss Daryl Powell who asserted firmly that Luke Gale will be playing at Belle Vue in 2024, explaining that the veteran has picked up a “tweak from training”.
There’s now been confirmation from the other side of the deal with Hull KR boss Willie Peters reporting that there was never an offer made by the club to move for Luke Gale.
When asked outright by Serious About Rugby League if an offer was made, the Australian confirmed: “No, it wasn’t”.

Whilst Peters confirmed that an offer hadn’t been made, he did explain that the club would have been interested in Luke Gale were he available.
He went on to explain the difficulties of the market claiming that a replacement half was “not an easy fix”, something that the Robins had managed last season when they landed a deal for young star Brad Schneider from Canberra Raiders.
Schneider left Humberside at the end of the 2023 season to join NRL champions Penrith Panthers, leaving the Robins with a trio of halves in Mikey Lewis, Tyrone May and Jordan Abdull.
Abdull’s loan move to Catalans is what has created this void with Peters confirming a clear interest to sign a half, but clarifying it wouldn’t be Luke Gale.
He explained: “Oh, we’d be interested in any experienced player but obviously Luke’s at Wakefield and I don’t think they’re going to let him out so we won’t explore that one.
“There’s a lot of good players out there that we’d like. It’s obviously whether they can get out of their contracts, want to get out of their contracts, they’re aligned to the club.
“So there’s a lot to happen before we get that player and that’s why we haven’t got anyone on board at the moment because it’s just not an easy fix.”
How can Hull KR replace Jordan Abdull

The Robins’ reported pursuit of Luke Gale or more generally a half-back was as a result of Jordan Abdull’s loan move to Catalans Dragons, with Willie Peters admitting that losing Abdull leaves KR lacking depth.
“We had some depth there with Jordan and that depth has been sort of taken away a little bit but like you say, we want to sit back and just and just wait for that right person because we showed last year when we did that it was effective as well,” Peters noted, referencing the smart pick-up of Brad Schneider.
“So we want someone to come in and be that person that comes in and wants to stake a claim in the team. So we need a halfback and that’s what we’ll be looking for.”
With limited options on the market currently, the Robins will likely have to start their season with no true back-up behind Mikey Lewis and Tyrone May, however, Peters has explained that key signing Peta Hiku’s versatility gives them options.
Praising the Kiwi’s impressive training camp, Peters stated: “Peta is fully on board, he’s fully in with where we want to head. We pulled him out of a drill, literally a block just recently, because he’s done every single session, every single block, and just wants to get better and better.”
He also explained that Hiku’s ability to play a variety of positions gives Rovers a solid plan B if injuries strike again, as they did in 2023.
I’ve seen nothing but a player that I believe is going to make a real impact this year in the Super League and will make a real impact at KR.
“It doesn’t matter what position he plays, he’s playing full-back at the moment, but he can play centre, he can play in the halves, so we’ve got a handy replacement.
“Although we’re looking for half at the moment, Peta is our next person in line for that. So he’s going to be a key player for us this year and he’s shown all the signs of training now. It’s just a matter of doing it when we start.”
The Robins kickstart their pre-season with a clash against Sheffield Eagles this weekend before they open up Super League 2024 with a match-up against their cross-city rivals Hull FC on Thursday 15th February.
