Hull KR boss on Rhyse Martin blow and off-season recruit’s push for fitness

Hull KR boss Willie Peters has expressed his disappointment to lose Rhyse Martin for the next month through injury.

Martin fractured his foot in the Challenge Cup win over Huddersfield Giants last weekend and is now set for a four-week stint on the sidelines.

The Robins aren’t short of back-row options in the Papua New Guinea international’s absence, with the head coach confirming that James Batchelor would return to the fold after missing out on the trip to the Accu Stadium, while Dean Hadley is also available.

Karl Lawton will be ready to return in a couple of weeks, too, once he has completed the three-game ban he got the challenge that injured Matty English.

Peters. though, believes Martin was just beginning to find form in the position this season and his loss comes as a major blow.

“It’s obviously disappointing for Rhyse and for us as well,” Peters said. “He’ll be on the sidelines for about a month.

“He played through it until the end of the game and thought it was okay. We sent him for scans and it’s come back with a break.

“It was incredible for him to play through that but unfortunately he’ll have some time on the sidelines now.

“He was just starting to find his groove for ’26. He had the opportunity to start on the weekend and I thought he grabbed that. We’re looking forward to him coming back in a month’s time.”

One man pushing to catch Peters’ eye in the pack is Jordan Dezaria, who joined the club from Catalans Dragons over the off-season. The prop picked up a hamstring issue during pre-season and hasn’t played for the KR first-team just yet, but he did feature for the club’s reserves last weekend against their Hull FC counterparts.

“He had a couple of hamstring issues in pre-season so he’s off the pace a little bit,” Peters said.

“He’s more of an explosive sort of player, a short-minute time Sam Lisone-type player. We know that we’re never going to get a 30 or 40 minute stint out of Jordan, it’s going to be more explosive.

“For me, it’s when we think we need that. For the last two weeks, I’ve been happy with our middles. Obviously we weren’t at it against Leeds, but they had the chance to redeem themselves, and we’ve got Jack Brown there waiting as well.

“There’s a couple there waiting for an opportunity and I know when Jordan gets his opportunity, he’ll take it. There’s just a few things he knows he needs to work on, and we’re looking at that in training and when he plays.”
