Hull KR boss Willie Peters believes Mikey Lewis is starting to find his groove once more as the Super League season gathers pace. The Robins sit three points clear at the top of the table after five rounds with the east Hull outfit winning every game they’ve played so far this season.
Of course, it’s still early in the campaign, but big wins over St Helens and Leigh Leopards have underlined their credentials and Rovers fans will be dreaming of what their beloved club could be capable of this season. Lewis was instrumental in both those wins, with last season’s Man of Steel opening the scoring at Saints before registering two tries and an assist against Leigh on Sunday.
Lewis was one of several key performers in red and white against the Leopards and Adrian Lam’s side struggled to cope with his ability and strength on the ball at times. To top off a fine showing, he kicked five goals, too, slotting some tricky conversions from wide positions in Rhyse Martin’s absence.
Peters knows there Lewis is capable of much, much more as the season progresses, but he also knows the half-back’s devastating best isn’t too far away.
“It was good to see him slot them over with his goal kicking,” Peters said after the game on Sunday. “He’s starting to get in a bit of a groove.
“Obviously he didn’t play last week but he played against St Helens and was back [against Leigh]. His best will be ahead, there’s no doubt about that, once he gets a few games under his belt.
“I was pleased to see him get a couple of tries but there’s other things in his game that we value more and again it’s based around defence.”

Lewis will be keen to build on last week’s showing on Sunday when Hull KR travel to bottom of the table Huddersfield Giants and it seems he could have a new man to play off with Arthur Mourgue ready and available. The Frenchman was left out of the Leigh game but is eligible to make his debut at the John Smith’s Stadium and could well take on the full-back reins.
“He’s fine, we just wanted to ease him in,” Peters added on Mourgue. “It’s a new country, new surroundings, new systems and make sure that he finds his feet and he’ll get some game time.”
