Hull KR boss gives injury update on key pair amid Challenge Cup selection hint

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters expects Tom Amone to be fit enough to feature in the World Club Challenge.

Amone suffered a fractured hand during the Robins’ warm weather training camp in Tenerife earlier this month and hasn’t been able to train since as a result. As such, he sat out of the clash with Wakefield Trinity on Sunday and as it stands, he looks set to miss round one of the Super League season.

However, the Robins boss has high hopes of seeing his most experienced forward passed fit to take on Brisbane Broncos the week after their opener against York Knights, and that will come as a big boost.

Peters also confirmed that Sam Luckley is on track with his recovery from surgery on what is thought to be a meniscus injury following the club’s Grand Final win. Luckley spent a chunk of the off-season on crutches, but he is working towards a full recovery now with Peters outlining that he just needs to build up his fitness before he can be considered ready for action.

“Tom Amone broke his hand when we were in Tenerife but he’ll be OK for the World Club Challenge but he’s unlikely for round one,” Peters confirmed when speaking on Sunday afternoon after his side’s friendly defeat to Wakefield. “Other than that everyone is tracking OK.

“Sam Luckley is on his way back, we want to get a little bit more running into him but it’s probably just those two at the moment.

“Everyone else I think we’re OK from today which is a positive.”

Hull KR Challenge Cup selection hint

Peters named a young side on Sunday made up almost entirely of new signings and academy products. However, he has confirmed that the plan is to go stronger in the Challenge Cup third round against Lock Lane at Craven Park, with those senior players preparing to enter the game day cycle.

“We didn’t play the experienced guys today because they prefer to play and then have that week to week rugby rather than playing today and having a couple of weeks off,” he added. “I didn’t want to play them today and then again against the amateur team in the Challenge Cup as well.

“I spoke to some of the senior leaders and they preferred starting that process against them.”
