Hull KR boss clears up Salford Red Devils rumours after Marc Sneyd and Nene Macdonald links

Hull KR Willie Peters

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has addressed reports that his side were interested in Salford Red Devils duo Marc Sneyd and Nene Macdonald.

Throughout the off-season, there were countless reports and links regarding Salford Red Devils players given their well-documented financial issues.

The club requested and were granted an advance on their central funding in November before then being subject to a strict £1.2 million salary cap in January when the RFL ordered them to cut costs.

That cap remains in place for this weekend’s game against Midlands Hurricanes, however, the Red Devils have confirmed a takeover and believe it will be lifted for their Round One Super League game against St Helens.

With the daunting prospect of cutting costs by £800,000, player exits seemed the most likely way to fund that which saw the likes of Marc Sneyd and Nene Macdonald linked with Super League rivals – including Hull KR.

Robins’ head coach Willie Peters has now addressed whether there was ever any truth to those rumours.

Appearing on BBC Radio Humberside on Thursday night before KR’s Friday night Challenge Cup clash, Peters was asked about those reports – something he firmly denied.

“We didn’t ask about either of those players,” the Australian told BBC Radio Humberside, however, he did admit that those at Craven Park kept a watchful eye on the situation.

He said: “You have different conversations around players all the time. We were looking at the Salford thing as everyone was.

“But, for the game and for Salford, I’m really happy that they’ve got their team together.”

His comments came prior to the official news of the Salford takeover, something that happened just over 12 hours after he spoke on the radio. With the confirmation of that takeover, any player sales look extremely unlikely.

Salford’s new owners have cleared the club’s debt and secured the Red Devils’ future in a huge boost for all of Super League on the eve of the season.
