Mikey Lewis has been pictured in Hull KR pre-season training for the first time since going under the knife. The Rovers half-back had an operation on a minor groin issue last month after struggling with the issue throughout last season.
The surgery was pre-planned with the club using his down time between finishing off with England at the start of November and starting pre-season as the right time to fix the troublesome issue. Lewis’ recovery wasn’t expected to prevent him from returning to pre-season training this month and he has pulled on his boots once more.
He has been pictured in training at Craven Park with his involvement likely coming as a big boost for both Hull KR and the clubs’ fans, who will have had their fingers crossed that the 23-year-old was able to recover as expected. Lewis will now be hoping to build a head of steam over pre-season as Willie Peters’ side aim to bounce back from their agonising Grand Final defeat last time out.
Of course, Lewis won the Man of Steel award last time around, but that loss at Old Trafford will leave him champing at the bit to go one better this season and end the club’s trophy drought, which is entering its 40th year.
His number six returning to training ensures that Peters is working with a squad that is close to being complete, with the exception of Tyrone May, who will be due back into the country at the start of next month after the birth of his child.
Sam Luckley isn’t able to train either after surgery on his wrist last month, but he has been pictured running. Peta Hiku and Rhyse Martin have started training, too, despite playing for their national teams Down Under just last month.
Hiku made three appearances for New Zealand with his last run out coming on November 10 against Papua New Guinea with Martin playing in the same game. The pair are training though, alongside the clubs other new signings with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves making the move over in time for day one.
