Sam Luckley looks set to miss the start of the Super League season after undergoing surgery, Hull KR have confirmed. The prop forward has had a wrist operation over the off-season and isn’t expected to return to training for another 10 weeks.
As such, Luckley will miss the Robins‘ pre-season trip to Amsterdam, where they will take on York Knights, and after missing the next two and a half months of training under Willie Peters, it’s fair to assume that he will sit out of the club’s opening couple of Super League games at least.
It comes as a big blow for the Robins, who will be looking to get off the mark quickly in 2025 after losing in the Grand Final back in October. It was KR’s first appearance in the Super League showpiece and the performances of Luckley were one of the major reasons for their success.
The forward made 27 appearances for the Robins last season in all competitions, with his two tries coming in a convincing win over London Broncos in the capital. Luckley started just one game under Peters last season, but his impact and energy off the bench regularly helped to swing games in KR’s favour.
The news comes just a couple of days after Mikey Lewis posted on Instagram to confirm he had gone under the knife, too. However, the expectation is that the playmaker will be able to return to training as scheduled next month after being given extra time off following his appearances for Shaun Wane’s England.
Most of the Hull KR squad returned to Craven Park this week to begin pre-season training, with the club posting updates on social media over the last few days. The Robins returned to the grass on Friday with the likes of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Tom Davies and Bill Leyland seen training with their new teammates.
