Hull KR bid to honour club legend Phil Lowe backed

Hull KR have secured initial backing in their bid to honour club legend Phil Lowe who sadly passed away in March.

Phil Lowe was a giant of a man and one of the finest players to ever pull on a Hull KR shirt but his exploits were not limited to his home city as he forged a career in Australia too.

Such is his legendary status at Hull KR that the club wanted to pay further tribute to him and plans on how they would do that were announced at the club’s awards night in September.

The Robins had made the request to the Hull City Council for the road that their home ground, Craven Park, stands on to be renamed ‘Phil Lowe Way’.

It has now been confirmed that the bid can ‘go ahead in principle’, as reported by the BBC, meaning that further consultation into the name change will now take place.

Lowe’s passing, aged 74, back in March was one that rocked many Hull KR supporters with Lowe being one of a handful of Robins players who saw his greatness transcend the bounds of Craven Park.

His venture Down Under to sign with Manly was one that signified his greatness and was a path that few before him had taken. Whilst in Australia, he would lift a Grand Final and therefore become one of few to do so on both sides of the world.

Lowe played over 400 games for Hull KR with his 418 appearances putting him sixth on the all-time charts for the club, whilst his try-scoring exploits are even more impressive with just Roger Millward and Steve Hartly ahead of him.

The club’s bid to honour Lowe by renaming the road that Craven Park stands upon was one that received support from plenty of fans, not least Lowe’s son, Andy.

It’s typical that the dedication of a street name takes ten years after someone’s death before being considered but fellow KR legend Roger Millward saw a street renamed after him within that period.

For that reason, a precedent has been set whilst Hull KR also campaigned on the basis that the street’s current name ‘Poorhouse Road’ is one that is not reflective of the ‘character of the area or aspirations of the local community’.

Another way that Hull KR have honoured Lowe is in their 2025 shirt design with the forward’s legendary quote ‘Memories are better than dreams’ featured in the collar.

With Members of the council’s East Area Committee agreeing in principle to the name change, hopefully, Robins fans can be walking down Phil Lowe Way to matches sometime soon in the near future.
