Willie Peters on why Hull KR were pipped by Wigan Warriors to Super League title

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has explained why he feels his side lost to Wigan Warriors in the Super League Grand Final.

It was a low-scoring game, with just one try – a wonderful individual effort in the first half, that was added to with a drop-goal right on the half-time hooter.

The only points the Robins managed to pick up were two from a penalty, but these were cancelled out shortly after, and the Warriors held on to take home yet another trophy under Matt Peet.

For his opposite number, however, it will have been a frustrating one, as that’s the third time in two years that they’ve been within touching distance of silverware, to no avail.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Peters said: “I’m proud of the players, I’m proud of what they’ve done – what they’ve done all season, not only tonight.

“I think the performance tonight… we never gave in and that’s what Hull KR people do. You’ve got to work hard and be resilient. That’s in our DNA and I think we showed that again tonight.”

He noted a distinct difference between the sides, adding: “Although we were on the wrong end of the scoreboard, we played against a very good team that know how to win those games and they took their moments.

“I’m extremely proud to be head coach of this team and no-one at a place certainly didn’t let anyone down tonight.

“Yeah, just moments. I mean, ultimately it was one try, the difference.

“They iced their moments and we didn’t. You know, it’s fine margins in this game when it comes to grand finals, and we just didn’t ice our moments that we had.”

They have now had more experience of playing in big games, however, and will hope that they can build on their ability to take their chances in 2025.

It was a much better performance than the cup semi final game but ultimately it wasn’t good enough.
