Being given a nickname is one thing, but being given one which is fairly negative makes it even more surprising when it actually sticks.
For Hull FC halfback Josh Reynolds, the nickname ‘Grub’ is one which doesn’t bother him – and it’s one that has lived with him since he first came onto the scene back in the NRL.
Seven years at the Canterbury Bulldogs yielded 138 appearances before a move to the Wests Tigers came about in 2018.
Reynolds’ move came with an incredible degree of pressure and he made just over 20 appearances until the halfback ditched Australia for Super League.
The 33-year-old made the move to the MKM Stadium ahead of the 2021 season and now Reynolds has revealed where his nickname has come from and why it doesn’t put him off the game.
“People know I’m a bit of a dirty player and in that sense it doesn’t worry me,” Reynolds told Sky Sports.
“I don’t go out there thinking about it but I’m always in the middle of it.
“If I can get under someone’s skin and put them off their game then that will help our side.”
Reynolds, however, couldn’t inspire Hull to victory over their bitter rivals Hull KR as they went down 16-4 on Good Friday.
