Hull FC suffer major injury setback

Hull FC have reportedly suffered a key injury setback with one of their star players in line for some time out.

Per the Hull Daily MailJordan Abdull – one of the club’s 10 signings ahead of the 2025 season – is still suffering from his knee injury with the club refusing to rule out operating.

Abdull was signed by the Black and Whites after the playmaker had a largely unsuccessful loan spell with Catalans Dragons, having left parent club Hull KR in a surprise move at the start of 2024.

The Hull-born playmaker had been one of Hull KR’s best players early in their 2023 campaign but injury derailed his campaign and he was subsequently allowed to leave on loan, before then making the cross-city switch to FC.

Abdull is currently rehabbing his knee after suffering an earlier setback in pre-season but new updates from head coach John Cartwright, as reported by Hull Daily Mail, suggest that it could the return to play could be a drawn-out process.

Abdull had previously spoken with Serious About Rugby League about his injury at Catalans and how he had “regrets in terms of how I handled myself in the last two or three months”.

The playmaker played just 16 games at Catalans and only one played once in the club’s final nine games of the season. As such 2024 marked the fifth consecutive season where he failed to make 20 appearances.

Now, those injury problems are recurring and head coach John Cartwright confirmed that a knee operation has not been ruled out, although is deemed a last resort.

“That’s an option,” Cartwright explained to the Hull Daily Mail.

“That would rule him out for a while though. We’re trying to get him right.

“In the long term, that would be in his better interests to have an operation but at the moment, we’re just trying to rehab him.”

Speaking on the possible timeframe, Cartwright added: “He’s still in rehab. It’s just going to be a process. He’s in the hands of the medical team at the moment. He’s doing plenty of training – he’s just unable to do a lot of running. He’s doing a lot of off-feet and he’s in the rehab squad.

“It’s a week-by-week thing. He’s a little bit better this week than he was before he left (for Christmas), but it’s just going to be a process. The staff are all working really hard with him, and he’s working very hard himself, too. It’s just a slow process.”

Abdull was in line to be the starter alongside fellow signing Aidan Sezer but should his rehab become a lengthy process then the likes of Cade Cust or Jack Charles could deputise.
