Sky Sports pundits haven’t held back on Hull FC, after their 58-4 pasting at the hands of Salford Red Devils sent them bottom of the Super League table.
They now sit below the rest of the Super League sides – even below London Broncos on points difference, and this is just another devastating defeat in a terrible 2024 campaign for the Black and Whites.
The side also hold the worst disciplinary record in the division, and have lost four quota players across the course of the peculiar season.
Sky Sports pundits blast “dire” Hull FC over “self-inflicted” shocker campaign
Brian Carney revealed a devastating stat: “If they lose next week to the Catalan Dragons, it’ll be the worst win percentage they have returned in a league and cup season in their 159-year history.
“It’s already the worst points for and against match average in a club’s history. There is nothing that has gone their way this year and you would say it is all self-inflicted.”
Adding to that, St Helens and England star Jodie Cunningham said: “It’s dire for Hull FC, and it’s hard to see where those improvements are going to come from.
“You don’t mind when your team is getting beat by better teams, but they’re getting absolutely battered week in, week out and that’s a tough ask for the club.
“There’s a lot of changes that are needed there and they’re really going to have to turn this around and it’s probably the opposite situation to here (Huddersfield). They’ve got a really good, strong fan base and something to really build on they just need the performances to happen on pitch and this year’s just been a write-off.”
Unsurprisingly, Jon Wilkin also had plenty to say on the side’s situation, a decade after back-to-back Challenge Cup glory.
He said: “Three wins (all season), that’s just a shocker isn’t it? When Tony Smith got fired, we spoke about: ‘you don’t get sacked sometimes for getting beat, you get sacked for the manner of your defeat’.
“Well, look at the manner of the defeats over the last few weeks, it’s been a capitulation in their mentality and their mindset.”
Looking ahead at next year, he said: “A lot of young players coming into that team will be learning the most brutal of lessons right now but what about next year?
“Hardaker on board, Asiata on board, they’ve got Aidan Sezer on board, Rapana, so they’re bringing in some pedigree aren’t they but again I think a cultural systemic change at Hull FC probably needs to happen and not just on the field.
“You can’t just buy a team and everything’s alright. It’s going to come down to that (investment), they need a change.”
