Hull FC man Richie Myler drops contract news hint and makes recruitment prediction

Hull FC chief Richie Myler has revealed the Black and Whites have already secured two of their off-contract players this year. With 11 players off contract as the club head into the 2025 Super League season, it seems Myler and his coaching staff have plenty of decisions to make in the coming weeks and months.

The likes of Jordan Lane, Jack Ashworth, Ligi Sao, Tom Briscoe and Harvey Barron are amongst those in the final year of their respective deals alongside a number of promising youngsters that the club are keen to nurture.

Of course, some of those calls will be made later in the year with 2025 form seen as a key factor, but seemingly there a couple of new deals ready to be announced by the club, with Myler confirming some have put pen to paper to stay at the MKM Stadium.

“We’ve retained a couple of players which aren’t public domain at the moment,” FC’s chief executive and director of rugby said. “We have a couple of boys that are off contract.

“It’s a different dynamic December 1, you’re making a decision on a player before they’ve even played that coming season but there’s a couple of our players that are still in that area of uncertainty and there’s a question mark on a couple where they need to have a big season. They know that.

“It’s the same for other clubs, we’ve been going through rosters and thinking ‘well, this player is available, how about a conversation with them’. It’s throwing in a different dynamic into it and especially the question of when can we announce them.

“That will be the next one: when can we announce that we’ve signed a player without annoying anybody? I think it’s a good concept and it throws in another dynamic of social media and media attention, it’s fun actually.

“You may see some people leaving early because they get disgruntled at a club, ‘well he’s signed here for three years so why on earth are we keeping him?’, you might get that dynamic which I think some people might be trying to push, but not me at the minute.”

Hull FC have made no bones about their desire to make immediate additions to John Cartwright’s squad and they continue to keep a close eye on the situation at Salford Red Devils.

However, the Black and Whites are looking towards the future, too, as they put recruitment plans in place for 2026 and beyond.

“The way the club has recruited, without speaking out of turn, over a period of time, we’re changing that process,” Myler added. “There’s more of a collective decision between all the coaching staff.

“They’re actually planning 2027 and where our recruitment holes are going to be. We want to promote a lot from within. The St Helens model and Wigan is the best model, where they see a young centre coming through so they don’t put too many roadblocks in front of him. Also with the element of fixing our top product.

“So the pathways of where we see players progressing and where we want to recruit are ongoing on a weekly basis. That’s more of a collective effort from everybody, it’s not just one person making a call on a player.”
