Hull FC head coach Simon Grix has admitted that he wasn’t at his best, while interim coach of the club.
Hull FC narrowly missed out on finishing bottom, thanks to London Broncos losing heavily to Warrington Wolves.
This came despite a number of overseas signings ahead of this year, and four of their quota players left the club mid-season (over half of them).
After Tony Smith was sacked from this role as head coach, Simon Grix came in as interim coach, stepping up from the assistant job.
However, the side still struggled.
Hull FC interim boss Simon Grix admits he “can be better” after season of turmoil
Speaking after defeat to Catalans Dragons, via Hull Daily Mail, he said: “The review (of the season) is a tricky one.
“As staff, we’ll be doing a review for ourselves as well. We can give a bit of a review to players and we’ll invite everyone to have a good look at themselves.
“It’s easy looking out and pointing elsewhere, saying, ‘We haven’t got this right and the club haven’t got this right,’ but there’s bits in and amongst this where everyone could have given a little bit more and given a little bit more. It starts with the man in the mirror first.”
He continued: “That’s not me passing it on, I’ve not given the best of myself this year, there’s been a lot going on, and I know I can be better and bring more. Hopefully, everybody has got that approach moving into the off-season.”
Next year, the side will have John Cartwright as head coach, following his role at Brisbane Broncos as assistant – alongside Lee Briers.
A former Salford player, it’s his first coaching role in the UK, and he’ll be doing it with a very new-look side.
