Hull FC head coach John Cartwright has provided an injury update and conceded that a late call will be made on one of their star performers ahead of Thursday’s game against Castleford Tigers.
That star performer is Cade Cust who suffered a hip injury in the win against Wakefield Trinity meaning that he could miss out on Thursday’s trip to face another West Yorkshire side.
Cust has stepped up so far with the former Wigan and Salford man partnering nicely with club captain Aidan Sezer, however, Sezer may have a new man alongside him on Thursday as John Cartwright admitted it will be a late call.
“We won’t know until the day before the game so we’ll give him up until then,” the Hull FC boss told BBC Humberside when asked about the injury.
“We’ll assess him before training and then we’ll make a call then.”
Jordan Rapana plugged into the halves on Friday night so he will likely be the solution once again should Cust not pass fit.
Hull FC injury news with late call to be made on star and ‘too many to mention’ verdict
Pushed further on the state of the Cust injury, the Hull FC boss conceded that it’s simply a case of waiting to see how and if the Australian improves with no verdict given.
“It’s hard to know,” he admitted.
“It’s very painful so I don’t think there’s any chance of more damage. Like I said, it’s a lot better today than it was yesterday so we’ll just monitor the rate of improvement from there.”
Asked if he was worried about his half-back combination being split up, Cartwright bluntly responded: “It’s not something that you think about because you know at some stage you’re going to go through it. Like I said, we’ve got no point worrying about it, we’ll wait till training on Wednesday and then we’ll see from there.
Sadly for Hull FC, Cust was not the only injury concern to come out of Friday night with second-rower Jed Cartwright also suffering a blow, although there is no clear timeline for that.
John Cartwright said: “He’s got a hamstring tear, he’s getting scanned today so we’ll know a bit more when we get the result to be.
“Sometimes they’re worse than what you think and sometimes they’re better than what you think. So we’ll just have to get the scan results.”
There was also an update on Harvey Barron (hamstring), with Cartwright confirming: “He’s just been rehabbing. They diagnosed a four or six week injury, so he’s only a week into that so he’s very early in the stages of rehabbing himself.”
Worryingly, when asked about other injuries, Cartwright noted: “There’s a couple of bumps and bruises, nothing major but it’s a short turnaround so we won’t really be able to finalise their side till Wednesday.
“There’s too many to mention so yeah we’ll just get through to Wednesday and then you’ll know the team.”
