Hull FC hand popular forward a new deal

Manu Ma’u has signed a new one-year deal will remain with the Black & Whites for another year, with the new deal keeping him at the MKM Stadium until the end of the 2022 campaign.

Ma’u was one of the club’s stand out performers this season, producing a string of committed displays including a Man of the Match performance against rivals Hull KR.

The Tongan international, who captained his country to an historic victory over Australia in 2020, has notched up more than a century of NRL games and 15 international caps for both New Zealand and the country of his birth.

He has added a further 33 appearances for the Black & Whites and he is determined to make his mark for the club over the next 12 months.

Speaking to, Ma’u said:  “It was a disappointing end to the year and I was really gutted with the way it finished. I want to stay next year and prove that we can perform at a much better standard, because I know what we are capable of.

“I love playing games here in England because of the atmosphere. You don’t get that in the NRL and it gives you a buzz.

“The Derby is something in particular I want to be a part of again. The game in August was my first Derby in front of fans and I would love to play in that fixture again and we want to be able to give something back to the fans.”

Ma’u joins the likes of Player of the Year, Chris Satae, and Steve Prescott Man of Steel nominee, Jake Connor, in extending his stay with the club this season, alongside new recruits, Darnell McIntosh who arrives from Huddersfield Giants, and Fijian international hooker Joe Lovodua.

Hull FC head coach, Brett Hodgson, is pleased to have retained a player of Mau’s calibre and believes he will continue to develop a senior role in the squad.

“Manu has been excellent for us this season – he’s shown some real character and led by example throughout the campaign,” Hodgson said.

“He’s got better with every game throughout the season and adds some real prowess to our options at back-row.

“We’re delighted to have him tied down for another year and to continue to be a really key leadership figure within the group.”
