Hull FC forward talks on impact of losing star as ‘shining light’ duo picked out

Hull FC forward Herman Ese’ese has shared how he feels about stepping up in the Hull FC pack in 2025.

With Ligi Sao out for the rest of the season, Ese’ese is set to become a leader in the FC forwards with plenty of new faces and some inexperienced players in there too.

The prop spoke to Sky Sports after their 11-10 victory over Huddersfield Giants, where he took the man of the match award.

Talking about the Black and White performance, he said: “We had missed opportunities first half, gave away silly penalties, a lot of errors on good ball and we just kept ticking them away so it’s good to be back in the winner’s circle.”

Ese’ese was complimentary of the youngsters that have stepped up over the last year, in particular the two wingers, Lewis Martin and Harvey Barron, who both had solid performances again.

He added: “They’ve been going really well from last year, they’ve been shining a light during last year and just to see their growth, they’re just going to keep getting better. I definitely feel like they feature each winger.

Ese’ese admitted that Sao is a massive miss to the side but he’s prepared to try to fill his shoes in the forward line.

He said: “To lose someone like Ligi Sao, his presence in the middle and obviously a senior player as well and experienced.

“I was pretty much next man up and what happened there was pretty hard but I have full faith in the middles and taking over his role, we’ve done a good job.”

Whilst it wasn’t Hull’s best performance, the Hull FC forward believes there’s a good team spirit amongst the playing group.

He finished: “There are a lot of good signs, we had a really good pre-season with some good, experienced players coming in and just the whole vibe.

“It’s a lot of positives for this season and especially after that win tonight, we’ll take a lot of confidence from that.”
