Hull FC confirm permanent Jayden Okunbor exit

Hull FC have confirmed that one of their star signings from the NRL for the 2024 season in Jayden Okunbor will leave the club permanently to take up a new opportunity following a series of loan spells.

It marks the end of what was yet another piece of disastrous recruitment from the Black and Whites with three of their four overseas signings ahead of the current season now confirmed to be playing elsewhere.

Moreover, last year’s recruits Tex Hoy and Jake Clifford have also departed with Hoy tearing it up at Castleford Tigers and Clifford having returned to the NRL after just one season, highlighting a worrying trend for FC’s overseas recruits.

After sending Jayden Okunbor back out on loan to Bradford Bulls ahead of the Championship side’s clash with Toulouse Olympique this weekend, Hull FC have confirmed that the deal will become permanent once documentation has been made official.

He would make just eight appearances for the club and score a single try and the news of his exit was confirmed by the club in a short statement.

Having come to Super League with the profile of a winger / centre, head coach at the time Tony Smith opted to play Jayden Okunbor in the second-row before making the bold comparison to retired Hull KR star Shaun Kenny-Dowall.

Smith told the media that Jayden Okunbor wasn’t to be judged because star recruits such as Kenny-Dowall and even Trent Barrett at Wigan had taken time to adapt to Super League.

Since Smith’s sacking, Okunbor did not feature for Hull FC at all and has played five games out on loan at Bradford Bulls who will now sign him on a permanent basis it’s been revealed in FC’s statement today.

It read: “Hull FC can confirm that Jayden Okunbor has rejoined Bradford Bulls on loan, in a move that will become permanent upon the completion of the transfer of the player’s visa documentation.

“Okunbor has made eight appearances for the club during the 2024 season, while also appearing five times for the Bulls on loan.

“The club would like to thank Jayden for his efforts in Black & White, and wish him all the best for the future.”

It must be said that it is a brilliant signing for Bradford Bulls who have now recruited two of the players that Hull FC had brought in from the NRL with both Franklin Pele and Jayden Okunbor now set to feature at Odsal on a permanent basis.

The club’s other NRL recruit pre-season, Nu Brown, was released on compassionate grounds earlier in the year whilst thankfully for the Black and Whites, they have hit a good one in Herman Ese’ese who has been one of the standout props in Super League this season.
