Hull FC interim coach Simon Grix has given his take on Derek Beaumont’s persistent social media comments as the Leigh Leopards owner continues to take aim at the Black and Whites.
Having won just three games all season, Hull are propping up the Super League table at present and with just one game still to play, they will be doing all they can to beat Catalans Dragons on Saturday and avoid picking up the wooden spoon. However, being on the end of one-sided scorelines has become something of a habit for the East Yorkshire outfit.
The club has shipped more than 40 points in game on eight occasions, with recent defeats to Leeds Rhinos and Salford Red Devils seeing FC hit new lows. Leeds recorded a 68-6 win over Hull at Headingley before Salford beat an inexperienced and young side 58-4.
As such, most facets of the club have received criticism of late, and Beaumont has been very vocal in his belief that Hull should be relegated from Super League. The Leigh owner has previously accused the club of putting their cue in the rack this season in the knowledge that they have the required IMG grading to be safe from relegation.
After the Leeds loss, he took to social media to call the club a ‘disgrace to the game’ and last weekend, he claimed he would be pursuing a legal fight to ensure Hull FC are relegated to the Championship following this season.
It’s hardly a surprise then that Grix was asked about the comments in the lead up to this weekend’s match.
“I don’t have all the details. I know Derek from the Asiata situation,” Grix told the BBC. “There’s been a bit of an issue there. I believe to my knowledge that the IMG system was voted in. I really don’t understand why it’s a talking point.”
Asked if he was surprised, Grix added: “I’m not surprised. Derek is entitled to his opinion and he doesn’t mind sharing it. He’s done it before, it’s fine, he’s a character in our game and personally I find him to be really entertaining. He wears his heart on his sleeve.
“He’s done a great job for Leigh and I won’t knock a bloke who’s throwing his money into the game. For me, I think if something was voted in, I’m not sure how it’s an issue.
“I don’t know how Derek voted but that’s how it is.”
