Andy Last was left lamenting the fact that his side suffered yet another narrow defeat, however, he spoke with pride about his Hull FC team following the loss to Warrington Wolves.
The Black and Whites looked well out of it at the 60-minute mark, trailing 16-2, but they clawed it back to 16-14 thanks to magnificent work from the retiring Tom Briscoe to create the first and score the second, although it was just too little, too late.
Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Last assessed: “Another narrow loss. I’m disappointed obviously with the result, but really proud of the performance, up against a very good team who were in good form and we went toe to toe with them for 80 minutes.”
It marks yet another home loss but Last asserted that his side played for the badge and put in a performance that the team could be proud of, despite their season being another one without play-off rugby.
He admitted: “It’s been difficult but we spoke six to eight weeks ago now about making the end of the season about us, and that’s obviously the first-team squad and that coaching staff, and just making sure that we turn up and play for each other each and every week, and I think we did that.”

Hull FC coach pays tribute to Tom Briscoe after final home game
One positive of the defeat was Tom Briscoe, who had confirmed earlier in the week that he would be retiring at the end of the season, hanging up the boots at the same club he started at.
In his final home performance, he tallied a try to add to his 181 previous Super League tries, a figure that ranks him ninth all time.
Paying tribute, Last said: “Tom Briscoe obviously, a remarkable performance from him today. He’s been a brilliant servant for this club, and obviously it was great that he was able to score in his last home game, obviously in front of the home fans.”
With two games to go, the latter of which will see Briscoe return to Headingley to face former club Leeds Rhinos, Last insisted that there is no looking ahead to 2027, but instead a focus on finishing 2026 strong.
“We want to put in our best performances,” he said.
“We’ve got a duty to the shirt and a duty to ourselves, so we’ll be going to Toulouse and looking to put in a strong performance and then try and cause a couple of disruptions obviously with Leeds on that last game.”
He also admitted that his side were ‘unlikely’ to have returning bodies for next week’s game against Toulouse, adding: “I think obviously a few other boys are a bit banged up from today’s game, so we’ll assess it over the weekend and then we’ll put a strong competitive team out against Toulouse.”
