Hull FC chief Richie Myler provides Jordan Abdull clarity and talks next steps

Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler has opened up on his decision to part ways with Jordan Abdull earlier this month. The Black and Whites made Abdull one of their first signings for the 2025 season last year, bringing the half-back back to the club where he started his career.

The hope was that he could form a partnership with Aidan Sezer over pre-season and help to lead Hull’s recovery under new head coach John Cartwright. However, injury struck in the first few weeks of pre-season and it stunted the playmaker’s progress and traction on the training field.

With the season edging closer, though, Hull made the decision to release Abdull from his contract with the club to pursue options elsewhere. And, speaking during a Q&A with the media on Monday morning, Myler provided clarity on the reason the decision was made.

“It was a difficult one because obviously we really wanted it to work,” Myler said. “Jordan undeniably has lots of talent and everyone who has seen him or been against him has been underneath those spiral bombs that are horrible to catch.

“He just couldn’t get on the training field unfortunately. The decision was made as a club to move forward and to stand for what we want to try and build here, so if people can’t quite get to that standard you have to make tough decision and it was a difficult decision.

“We wish him all the best and hopefully he does recover and he is able to perform at a level that he can get back to. It was our decision that we’d be hypocrites to everybody else and the tough conversations we’d have previously in pre-season and prior to pre-season where we thought it probably wasn’t going to be the right fit.

“We want to stick down that mantra and stick by what we want to achieve here and build over a period of time. A difficult decision had to be made to release him from his contract. We were able to come to an agreement with his manager and we wish him all the best wherever he ends up next.”

It means that Hull FC are approaching the new season with just two senior half-backs in the group and both are new to the club, with Sezer set to partner former Wigan Warriors man Cade Cust.

“Their pre-seasons have been strong, and they have both trained in that position together for a long period of time through pre-season,” he added.

“Abdull wasn’t able to train throughout pre-season, so Cade and Aidan, along with Jack Charles and Callum Kemp in that mix, have confidence in there, plus with John Asiata in as a leader. They give a good dynamic.

“John is very comfortable on it, to be honest. He likes players who can play multiple roles; Zak Hardaker can play there, and Jordan Rapana can too, so I believe he’s confident in the players he’s got, but we are always actively looking for the right fit to come in. That might be another 14, or it might be another middle. It could be anywhere. Anyone who would make the starting team better we would be interested in.”
