Hull FC CEO Richie Myler has cleared the air once and for all on that infamous incident in the tunnel with Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess.
Cast your mind back to May 2024 when Warrington travelled to Hull FC and post-match, the pair appeared to clash in the tunnel.
It all started over an error on the Wolves’ teamsheet meaning they ended up losing an interchange.
Adam Holroyd was named on the teamsheet having not been in the 21-man squad released during the week and appeared to be replacing Connor Wrench.
Talking to Jenna Brooks and Jon Wilkin on The Bench podcast, Myler shared what really happened with Warrington boss Burgess.
He said: “I think it was made into more than it was, I think it was brilliant for Sky, it was the most-watched thing.
“I think it started with the match commissioner asking me ‘Could I let them have a sub back because of a filing error?’.
“It was the first week of my job and I just said ‘Well, I’m not sure that that’s my responsibility’ to allow them to have a sub back.
“He said ‘Well, it’s not, it’s the RFL’s’ and I said ‘Well, rule on it then, don’t ask me to rule on it’.
“Apparently, he went back to Sam and said we were saying they couldn’t have it, which annoyed Sam.
“Before the game, he came to me and I said ‘Well, I don’t feel it’s my decision if you have your sub back or not’.
“After the game, I may have said something cheeky in the sense of the line and I apologise now.”
When asked by Brooks exactly what he said to Burgess in that moment, the Hull FC CEO replied: “I said something like, ‘Well, you didn’t even need his sub’ because he didn’t because he easily won so I didn’t think he needed it.
“We needed him not to have the sub!”
When he saw Burgess in the tunnel, he said: “I was pot committed because I was already stood there. I just thought I can’t move because if I move, it’s a thing then. I mean he’s a big fella.”
