Hull FC captain makes Wakefield claim, hails two teammates and gives Richie Myler verdict

Hull FC captain Aiden Sezer on Talksport

Hull FC fans have had contrasting fortunes in 2025 when compared to what happened in 2024.

They’ve had a large turnover of players, bringing in some much-needed experience but mixing it with a host of young former Academy players.

One of those is halfback and captain Aidan Sezer, who’s had a hand in Hull FC’s rise this season, especially through his kicking game and game management.

The captain discussed last week’s Challenge Cup win over Wigan Warriors, changing around the beliefs at the club and working with former Leeds Rhinos teammate Richie Myler as his boss whilst on Talksport on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking about the win over Wigan, he said: “There’s been a few tight ones, especially from the weekend, coming from a 16-point deficit at half-time against the champs in Wigan. It was a good game to be a part of and hopefully a stepping stone for us as a club.”

Sezer thinks that they’ve performed better than most pundits and fans alike had anticipated but admits it’s early doors with lots of work still to be done.

He added: “A lot has been said in the pre-season about last year and the misfortune the club had but it’s an entirely new group, a group that’s filled with optimism and ambition.

“We’ve started the season better than what a lot of people were anticipating but we had the belief in the camp. You get some wins early and it gets some good confidence around the club.

“It’s only early on, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves because we know we’ve got a tough team tonight in Wakefield. It’s about week after week and performing to the best of our abilities for the club.”

Looking ahead to Friday night’s fixture, the Hull FC captain said they weren’t underestimating Wakefield Trinity after their decent start to the season.

He added: “It’s a really tough game, they’ve started the year really well, they’ve gone away from home at Leeds and turned them over so we know what to expect. They’ve been really impressive in the opening rounds.”

Sezer also praised the young players at the club, in particular Lewis Martin and Harvey Barron, after the pair have stepped up to be starters in 2025.

On Lewis Martin, he said: “He’s been awesome for us, I think a lot of people see the end result of him scoring tries and on the back of the kicks.

“I guess what he and young Harvey Barron do for us, coming out of yardage and getting our sets started, the tough carries, a lot of people don’t give them the credit.

“That’s what I’ve been really impressed with, they’re such young kids and they’re tough, durable players as well.”

Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler is nearing the end of his first full year with the club and Sezer talked about only the positives of working with him.

He added: “I’ve played with Richie and he was a really intelligent player. I guess he’s going to take those attributes into that role, he understands the game a lot more than most.

“He was a very experienced player, he’s been around the game for such a long time so for the club, it’s only going to benefit us moving forward.”

To finish, the Hull FC halfback discussed the first Challenge Cup tie between Hull FC and Hull KR since 1986.

He finished: “I found out on WhatsApp, the boys put it in the group chat. I don’t think there’s been a Hull derby in the Challenge Cup since ’86 so you can tell that everyone’s pretty excited for the fixture.

“We’ve got two tough games away from home before then and we want to make sure we’re performing and go into that game full of confidence.”
