Simon Grix believes Jordan Rapana will be able to make a huge impact at Hull FC as they head into the the 2025 Super League campaign and beyond.
The Black and Whites have announced the signing of the Canberra Raiders favourite on a two-year deal with the 35-year-old making the move over to East Yorkshire for pre-season.
Rapana becomes the latest experienced head to join Hull, following on from the likes of John Asiata and Zak Hardaker, as he links up with his former coach John Cartwright, who will be taking as head coach ahead of next season. The pair worked together at Gold Coast Titans and Cartwright will be more than aware of what the New Zealand international will add to his side.
Grix, though, who is expected to return to his assistant role next season, is hopeful that Rapana’s mentality, personality and competitiveness can rub off on those around him in west Hull.
“A big one,” Grix said when asked about Rapana. “Age will be the focus on that one but I think most of us rugby league fans watch the NRL and he’s still one of the best every week.
“Having spoken to John about him, it’s not only his personal output which is a real benefit to us but also the person, character and the effect he’ll have on our group. He’s competitor and competes hard for everything and demands a lot on those around him, which will hopefully rub off on the group. For young lads such as Moy, having someone so experienced come in can only be a benefit.
“He had suitors, Canberra wanted him to stay there and he had Super League clubs, but I think a past relationship with John got it over the line. He coached him a long time ago at Gold Coast and John knows what he can do.
“He’s obviously pressed on with Rich (Myler) to get it done and in my opinion it’s a good signing for us. He’s still got plenty to offer and while a lot of focus will be on his age, the premier competition being the NRL, he’s still one of the best each time I’ve watched him so I don’t think we have to worry about that number. Hopefully he can help drag everyone up and contribute to a positive future.”
Of course, Rapana’s versatility is one of the major strings to his bow, with the Canberra man being just as comfortable playing in the outside backs or at full-back. Grix believes he’s perfectly suited to taking the number one at the MKM Stadium, though.
“I’d see him as a full-back,” the Hull FC interim coach told Serious About RL when asked where he might fit in. “You’d have to ask John when he crosses the water but full-back, wing, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen him play centre, possibly even half.
“He’s got that versatility about him which is great for any team particularly at the moment where you lose players within a game and you need to shuffle your team around. His focus will probably be on being a full-back.”
