Hull FC boss John Cartwright confirms injury blows to trio as key man stretchered off

Hull FC boss John Cartwright could be forgiven for fearing the worst when Ligi Sao was stretchered off in the first half of their loss to Wigan Warriors.

Sao came off second best after taking a carry into the Wigan line shortly after stepping into the fray, with the forward seen clutching at his leg.
He received treatment on the field and a stretcher was called as Hull’s medical staff carried him off the field and down the tunnel at the MKM Stadium.

The injury left Hull short through the middle and Wigan duly made the most of that as they steamrolled the Black and Whites.

Speaking after the game on the injury, FC head coach Cartwright said: “I won’t comment on it too much, but it didn’t look good when he went down the way he did, and he was stretchered off. He’ll get scans tomorrow (Saturday). It wasn’t pretty.

“I think he’s gone home. He was in a brace. He’s gone home to get his leg up and on ice. That’s what we were told at half-time. We’ll know more on Monday.”

To make matters worse, Hull FC, who were already without Jed Cartwright, Amir Bourouh, Jack Ashworth and Oliver Holmes through injury, saw vice-captain John Asiata pick up a bicep problem.

“Asiata also came off,” Cartwright added. “He’s got a cork in his bicep. There are also a few bumps and bruises. I haven’t spoken to the medical staff yet, but Ligi was the main one.”

Zak Hardaker was another to miss the clash against Wigan, with the centre struggling with a groin issue and the head coach confirmed that he could be set to miss next week’s clash with Huddersfield Giants as well.

“He did a little bit of damage at training (before Catalans),” he said. “He played in France, and he got through the game. He’s got a bit of a groin strain. It’s a bit of a week-by-week thing, but we’ll assess him. He could be out for a couple of weeks.”
