Hull FC boss gives injury updates on Cade Cust and John Asiata after beating Leigh Leopards

Hull FC boss John Cartwright has given injury updates on Cade Cust and John Asiata following the Black and Whites’ 26-12 win over Leigh Leopards.

The pair picked up injuries in the game at Leigh Sports Village, with Cust leaving the field in the first half after sustaining a hip problem. The Australian scored Hull’s first try in the game but an Edwin Ipape tackle left him in visible discomfort and he was eventually forced out of the action.

Asiata left the field of play in the second half after picking up a hamstring injury, too, to leave Hull with just 15 men available through the final quarter of the contest.

Cartwright was asked about the pair after the game and while he had hope for the pair, he wasn’t overly optimistic on Asiata’s issue.

“Custy’s really sore, he’s copped a hip pointer I think which is very painful, it’s a pretty bad one,” Cartwright told Sky Sports after the game. “You can generally get them back pretty quickly, we’ve got a long turnaround now going into Catalans.

“John didn’t look good. He grabbed his hamstring straight away. I just spoke to him then and when I asked him how he was, he didn’t give me a yes or a no, he just sort of frowned.

“He’ll get a scan but it didn’t look good.”

John Cartwright hails Hull FC defensive efforts

The Black and Whites scored four tries in the first half at Leigh, stunning the out of sorts Leopards to build up a 26-0 lead at half-time with Cust, Herman Ese’ese, Lewis Martin and Sam Eseh touching down.

Adrian Lam’s side applied pressure after the break and managed to hit back with a couple of efforts, but Hull’s defensive strength and nous prevented them from finding the comeback they craved.

“The first half was as good as we’ve been with the ball, I thought we were slick,” Cartwright added. “We had to repel them for the first 15 minutes, there was a lot of ball in play and they had a fair bit of field position but once we gained some field position, I thought the movement of the ball and our precision was as good as it’s been all year.

“Probably the most pleasing thing was the second half, we were under all sorts of pressure with some replacements we had to make and key players out on the side. We gave up a couple of tries but we had to scramble a lot.”
