Hull FC and Brett Hodgson set to miss out on big signing

Hull FC have been actively looking in the transfer market in recent weeks following the departure of Australian halfback Josh Reynolds.

Reynolds left the East Yorkshire club with immediate effect last week after failing to impress in an 18-month spell at the club.

Since then, head coach Brett Hodgson has been doing his best in the transfer market to bring in a halfback straightaway to replace him.

One of those names linked with the Black and Whites has been Newcastle Knights playmaker Tex Hoy.

Son of a surfing legend, Matt, Tex Hoy is a close family friend of the Johns brothers, with the rangy playmaker linked with an immediate move to the MKM Stadium.

Hoy has played just four games for the Knights in 2022 and has registered 21 games for Newcastle overall since debuting in 2020.

Still only 22 years of age, it would certainly be an indicator of Hull’s new policy of bringing through young players in a bid to freshen up Hodgson’s squad.

The move is set to be given the go ahead by the Knights’ hierarchy given the fact that the club want Anthony Milford to stay beyond his current short-term deal which expires at the end of the season.

Milford had given a ‘handshake deal’ to Wayne Bennett at the Dolphins, but Hoy’s departure could allow the halfback to stay with Adam O’Brien’s side for longer.

However, an injury to former Castleford Tigers livewire Bailey Hodgson – who joined the Knights ahead of the 2021 season – means that Hoy will not be released for 2022, according to well-respected Newcastle Herald journalist Barry Toohey.

“There’s plenty of talk about Tex going to Hull FC in the English Super League next season,” Toohey said on Toohey’s News: The Podcast.

“I think he has got a deal over there if he can’t land a spot in the NRL and there was talk of maybe the Knights letting Hoy go early, but the injury to Bailey Hodgson has knocked that on the head for the rest of the season.”

And, following Newcastle’s big 38-12 win over Gold Coast Titans, the Knights’ head coach Adam O’Brien confirmed Hoy would be playing the rest of the year at the club.

Hull have also been heavily linked with a move for current Tigers halfback Jake Trueman withe the playmaker expected to link up with Hodgson and the Black and Whites from 2023 onwards, bringing an end to his five-year stay at the Jungle.
