Hull FC 14-6 Huddersfield Giants: Highlights and match report

After such a positive start to the season, Huddersfield came unstuck against Hull FC today who now move level on points with Ian Watson’s men.

Tipped to be a great contest, the two delivered a tight game as both sides looked to continue impressive starts to the season.

Highlights:

Hull FC stand up defensively
In the first half the Black and Whites defence stood up against some Huddersfield pressure to vitally keep the Giants at zero. They held up Joe Greenwood not long before halftime whilst Andre Savelio and Chris Satae denied Chris Hill earlier in the game to maintain their momentum after taking the lead four minutes prior.

Grubber kicks the order of the day
Hull FC twice breached Huddersfield’s defence via Jake Connor’s grubber kicks to build up a 14-0 lead. The first was grounded by Mitieli Vulikijapani whilst the second was scored by Andre Savelio.

Match Report:

There was very little to talk about in the opening 10 minutes but after 13 minutes the match burst into life when Jake Connor’s grubber kick created a try for Mitieli Vulikijapni. A minute later Ben McNamara continued his recent success with the boot after kicking five goals against Leeds last week.

But only three minutes after that it was Huddersfield laying siege to the Hull FC line with Chris Satae and Andre Savelio working to deny Chris Hill.

Hull then had a chance to go further ahead when Josh Griffin was held up after an Adam Swift break before the Black and Whites again stood up defensively to hold up Joe Greenwood with 10 minutes until halftime. Their impressive defence kept it at 6-0 at the interval.

Huddersfield thought they’d levelled six minutes into the second stanza with Joe Greenwood looking to have scored after going close earlier but this effort was denied for double movement.

Two minutes later, McNamara added another two to Hull’s tally from a penalty before a vital try again from a Connor grubber, which outfoxed opposite number Tui Lolohea, setting up Andre Savelio this time. McNamara made it 14-0.

Then the big moment. Will Pryce was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Hull’s Connor Wynne making any hopes of a comeback even slimmer with Super League’s biggest starlet and one of Huddersfield best attacking weapons now sat on the side lines.

There was a late try for Huddersfield with Chris McQueen continuing his recent good form but that was as close as the Giants got as they went down 14-6.
