Huge Super League club considering surprise signing

Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, Hull FC, Hull KR and Huddersfield Giants have all made major signings for next season but one club who could be considering a shock signing is St Helens.

Though no names have been mentioned, it seems that the Saints are considering a shock move for a prop despite arguably having the best set of props in the league.

This is because of the repeated long term injuries Saints seem to be accumulating in the position with Alex Walmsley and Agnatius Paaasi the latest to suffer such injuries with Paasi facing a particularly lengthy period out.

On the possibility of signing a prop, Paul Wellens said on Saints TV:

“Potentially. It’s something that we’re having discussions around at the moment. We’re certainly not looking to replace those guys. We hope those guys return to fitness and get back playing for us because they’re both really valued members of the playing group and both brilliant individuals as well. We are having discussions.

“I think obviously the rise of George Delaney this year has eased that burden a little bit in terms of being able to play a middle. Morgan Knowles has shown he can move up, Sione Mata’utia has shown he can move up, so we do have options there.

“We’re going to have those discussions and see what best fits, but we don’t need to really jump at anything straight away. We prefer to be patient as a club and make the right decision and if that takes a few weeks or a couple of months longer then so be it.”

He also emphasised the struggles they are having when it comes to the middles:

“Yes, it’s been a challenge for us ever since Agnatius and Alex picked up injuries. We will deal with it the best we can like I’ve said numerous times, Sione can play in the middle, Joe Batchelor surely can do that, Sam Royle has been able to do that, we’ve got young Lewis Baxter who’s just narrowly missed out on the squad in the last few weeks as well. Despite missing players, we still have strong options.”
