Huge red card decision explained

For the second day in a row the blockbuster Challenge Cup Final has been marred by a red card.

Yesterday at halftime Josh Griffin was sent off for dissent against St Helens leading to a Hull FC defeat.

Meanwhile today Wigan Warriors star Kaide Ellis has been sent off for a head butt.

The prop was spotted head butting Stefan Ratchford who was bleeding after the incident.

The incident started as Wigan turned up the pressure defensively.

They trapped Warrington in the corner and on the first tackle of the Wolves’ exit set, the Warriors dragged them back off the pitch forcing a goal line drop out.

However, Ellis was then spotted pushing Stefan Ratchford starting a pile in and then the video referee spotted Ellis’ head butt on Ratchford resulting in his red card.

As always the incident was reviewed by the video referee who determined that a head butt has connected.

Thus, just like if he had thrown a punch, Ellis was sent off.

Wigan have taken the lead in his absence however ironically through Warrington loanee Toby King.
