Huge blow to Super League fans ahead of Magic Weekend

Three days of train strikes were recently announced by Aslef.

The decision to take industrial action comes as the train drivers’ union rejected a pay offer from 16 train companies.

Aslef’s general secretary Mick Whelan said: “Our executive committee met this morning and rejected a risible proposal we received from a pressure group which represents some of the train companies.

“The proposal – of just 4% – was clearly not designed to be accepted as inflation is still running north of 10% and our members at these companies have not had an increase for four years.”

As well as strikes, Aslef said it would withdraw non-contractual overtime from 15 May to 20 May and again on 13 May and 1 June.

But what does this have to do with rugby league?

Well the 3rd June is not only the day of the FA Cup Final but also the first day of the Magic Weekend.

This will see fans from every Super League club descend on Newcastle and train strikes will make it far more difficult for fans to get over to Newcastle.

That say sees Salford Red Devils and Hull KR collide, league leaders Wigan Warriors take on Catalans Dragons before Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers meet in a derby as they did last year.

Thus it is a big problem for these clubs certainly the five British clubs.

Making matters worse is the latest development that Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) will walk out on Friday, June 2.

The day before the event, this means fans hoping to get to hotels the night before won’t be able to use the train.

Here are the fixtures for Saturday (the day most effected):

Salford Red Devils v Hull KR

Wigan Warriors v Catalans Dragons

Leeds Rhinos v Castleford Tigers
