Huddersfield snap up Wigan back rower

Huddersfield have confirmed the signing of back rower Joe Greenwood on a two-year deal from Wigan.

The 27-year-old was part of the Warriors’ 2020 Grand Final side that narrowly lost out to St Helens in the dying seconds of the game.

He adds plenty of experience to Ian Watson’s side, having made over 130 appearances in stints with the Warriors, Saints and Gold Coast Titans as well as being an England Knights representative.

“It’s exciting times ahead and exciting times with the new coach coming on board,” said Greenwood. “The coach has had a lot of success and speaking to a few players that he’s had underneath him they’ve said that he brings the best out of you and especially me coming in to the prime of my career that’s where I want to be, and I want to push for more success.

“The way that Ian Watson spoke to me, the team will be pushing to win everything, and I feel with the recruitment going the way it is that’s definitely possible, like I said it’s exciting times ahead and we can definitely push for silverware.”

Giants Head Coach Ian Watson added: “Joe Greenwood is an awesome signing for us at Huddersfield and again is another recruit who will increase the Quality & Experience of our team.

“Joe is an international player who can play front row like he did against New Zealand in 2018 & in the back row like he has done for Saints, Wigan & Gold Coast in the NRL. I have no doubts that Joe will be pushing hard for a World Cup spot in 2021.

“Joe is a proven winner and is coming into his prime years as a footballer which really excites me. He’s a player I’m looking forward to working with he has a great size & attacking ability with his offloading & a steely defensive attitude which will improve our team.”

Greenwood is the Giants’ fifth new signing for 2021, joining hooker James Cunningham, forward Jack Ashworth, Australian halfback Jack Cogger and young hooker George Roby at the John Smith’s Stadium.
