Huddersfield Giants signing Tom Burgess has spoken on the prospect of facing brother Sam in Round One of Super League with the England international also outlining the Giants’ 2025 goals.
Tom Burgess is one of four NRL signings made by Huddersfield Giants as the club looks to bounce back from two consecutive seasons without making the play-offs.
Burgess joins with two other South Sydney Rabbitohs players in Taane Milne and Jacob Gagai, whilst Zac Woolford has also made the switch from the NRL. For Burgess, a return to England was something he had always intended.
“My ambition was always to come back here and play,” he explained speaking to Super League.
“When I was playing for Bradford, I think we never really achieved the potential we’d have liked. I always thought it would be nice to bring my family back here and show them where my dad is from a little bit too – the thought of that was appealing.”
“Then, when Huddersfield came forward, it was like it was meant to be – I grew up just around the corner. It all fell into place nicely and I’m enjoying being back here.”

Burgess’ signing was announced before the 2024 campaign even got underway but he is finally in England and raring to get started in Round One where he will line up against his brother Sam’s Warrington Wolves.
Sam Burgess’ appointment at the Halliwell Jones Stadium has turned the club’s fortunes around and Wire will be a huge test for Huddersfield and younger brother Tom, however, it’s one that he is embracing.
He explained: “Sam and I have had a bit of banter about it over Christmas. He rang me when I was running and said, ‘What you doing?’ and I replied with ‘I’m getting ready for Round One!’
“There will definitely be bragging rights there in the family that week.”
That fixture is now just over two weeks away but Tom believes it is a brilliant way to start the season and certainly a game that gives added motivation.
The Giants man said: “It’s a good one for Round One. I’ve never played against Sam in my career, only with him. I played against George and Luke in different times so it’s going to be interesting.
“He’s a competitive so-and-so and I would love to get one over on him, I can’t lie!”
A win in Round One could set the Giants up for a strong year and Burgess was asked what he felt would mark success for Huddersfield, which saw him give a club and a community answer.
He explained: “A successful year would be a considerate improvement on where we have been. Success starts with winning more games than we lose, so we need to try and string some good performances together.
“We’re also really passionate about connecting with the fans in the area – to try and inspire young kids to pick up a rugby ball and have a crack.
“A full circle moment is coming back here and being able to try and influence that – and if I can do that, it’ll be a success.”
